Nigeria schoolgirls: police ban anti-Boko Haram protest marches in Abuja

Supporters of missing girls told they can no longer gather due to 'security risk'

Nigerian police have banned protests in the capital Abuja by supporters of the more than 200 schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram militants as the activists vowed to challenge the "illegal" move.

Noisy street demonstrations in Abuja have become a regular feature of the campaign to put pressure on the government and keep the issue in the public eye seven weeks after the girls were abducted from a school in northern Nigeria on April 14.

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police spokeswoman Altine Daniel confirmed the ban in a text message to AFP, saying the decision was taken "because of security reasons".

Protest organisers questioned the legitimacy of the move and eyed a possible political motive, but police chief Joseph Mbu said the ban was imposed because of the threat of infiltration from "dangerous elements".

"There is no basis for and no power of FCT Commissioner of Police to ban peaceful assembly of any group of persons in... the city. None@ ALL," said protest leader Oby Ezekwesili on Twitte

Two 12-year-old girls stabbed their friend to impress someone they met on the Internet. 

They lured their friend, who is also their age mate,  into a wooded area in Milwaukee last weekend, and stabbed her 19 times, AFRICAN BOBO reports.

She was severely wounded but luckily, her life was saved because she was found by a bicyclist who was riding around the area. She is now receiving treatment at a hospital and is in stable condition.

The girls intended to kill their friend to impress a certain “Slenderman,” whom they met on a website called “Creepypasta Wiki,” which posts horror stories.

Slenderman is the site’s leader, and to be a part of his world, a user must first kill someone.

The fictional Slenderman character is reportedly an internet meme that often appears in horror stories, images, and videos. 

Although both girls are minors, they will face trial as adults. They have been charged with attempted homicide.

The first and second runner up are Daina Ifeoma Akpuru and Jennifer Okizie.

A bomb blast targeting a television viewing centre for football in northeast Nigeria killed at least 14 people and wounded 12 on Sunday, police and the military said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast in Gavan in the Mubi area of Adamawa state. Islamist militant group Boko Haram, whose struggle for an Islamic state is concentrated in the Northeast, would be the prime suspect.

"So far we have 14 dead while 12 are injured, some of them critically," police spokesman for Adamawa state Usman Abubakar said by telephone. He had no further details.

The group has set off several bombs across north and central Nigeria over the past two months, repeatedly causing carnage.

"I heard a loud blast. The place is near the market, which I had just left. I ran," said John Audu, a resident of the town.

Last weekend, a suicide bomber set out to strike an open-air viewing of a football match in the central city of Jos, but his car blew up before reaching the target, killing three people.
A suicide bombing the week before in Jos killed 118 people, and two bombs on the outskirts of Abuja in April killed 95 between them. Boko Haram, now seen as the main security threat to Africa's biggest economy and top oil producer, has killed thousands since launching an uprising in 2009.
The group is still holding more than 200 schoolgirls that it abducted on April 14, sparking international outrage.
Nigeria's president said on Thursday he had ordered "a full-scale operation" against Boko Haram and sought to reassure parents of the kidnapped girls that their children would be freed.
Since the girls were taken, Boko Haram fighters have killed at least 500 civilians, according to a Reuters count.
Two Italian priests and a Canadian nun, kidnapped in northern Cameroon nearly two months ago by suspected Boko Haram gunmen, were released on Sunday, smiling and apparently in good health as they arrived in the capital.
Cameroonian security forces killed some 40 Boko Haram militants in clashes in the country's far north, state radio said on Sunday. A presidency source confirmed the clashes, which took place west of the town of Kousseri, in the region bordering Nigeria and Chad.
Nigeria has accused Cameroon of not being tough enough on the militants hiding in its border region.

China pledges to limit carbon emissions for first time

China, the world's biggest greenhouse gas emitter, has pledged to limit its total emissions for the first time.
He Jiankin, chairman of China's Advisory Committee on Climate Change, told a conference in Beijing on Tuesday that an absolute cap on carbon emissions will come into effect from 2016.
"The government will use two ways to control CO2 emissions in the next five-year plan, by intensity and an absolute cap," Reuters reported him as saying.
China's emissions have risen dramatically in the last two decades, overtaking those from the US – the previous biggest producer – in 2006. Although the average Chinese person's carbon footprint is still much lower than the average American's, it is catching up, and is now on a par with the average European's.
The timing of the announcement – just a day after the Obama administration implemented tough new rules to cut carbon emissions from power plants 30% by 2030 – appears deliberately chosen to show China will also take a leadership role on climate change.
China set its first ever carbon targets in 2009, in the run-up to a major UN climate talks summit in Copenhagen, attended by Obama, Gordon Brown, Angela Merkel and other world leaders. The previous target was for a cut of emissions relative to its economic growth, by 40-45% by 2020, compared to 2005 levels, meaning absolute carbon emissions could still increase as China's economy grew.
But the new cap will be the first time that the country, which has been plagued by pollution problems in large part due to the burning of carbon-intensive coal, has promised to limit absolute emissions. Officials have not yet put a figure on what level the cap will be.
He told Reuters that the country's emissions were likely to peak at around 11bn tonnes CO2 equivalent – up from 7-9.5bn tonnes CO2e now – by 2030.
The move is likely to be welcomed by Christiana Figueres, the executive secretary of the UN climate secretariat, who oversees long-running efforts to reach an international deal on climate change. The Copenhagen meeting ended in a weak deal with non-binding targets, but countries have agreed to reach a new deal next year at a blockbuster summit in Paris.
Doug Parr, Greenpeace UK's chief scientist, said that the move by China, so shortly after the US announcement, showed "momentum" in the climate talks process.
“In the last 24 hours we’ve had two major announcements from China and the US which send a powerful signal to other world leaders ahead of crucial climate talks later this year. The Chinese government has already set out ambitious plans to cut the country’s reliance on coal – an additional cap on CO2 suggests the country’s leaders are serious about tackling their emission problem," he said.
The UN climate negotiations resume on Wednesday in Bonn.

The leader of Boko Haram sect, Imam Abubakar Shekau, released a video today in which he claimed responsibility for abducting the Nigerian school girls, and said he will soak all Nigerian soil with Christian blood, and Muslims opposing them, whom he described as infidels.
The video lasts 56 minutes and 58 seconds, and shows Iman Shekau speaking from a script, surrounded by heavily armed fighters, backed by an armored personnel carrier, and two other armed vehicles.
Iman Shekau said, “I am the one that took your girls.  Are you the one that created the girls? I will sell them in the market. I have my own market of selling human beings. It is Allah, the owner that instructed me to sell. I will sell the girls.”
And he added, “It is Allah that instructed us, until we soak the ground of Nigeria with Christian blood and so called Muslims contradicting Islam. After we have killed, killed, killed, and get fatigue and wondering on what to do with smelling of their corpses, smelling of Obama, Bush and Jonathan worried us then we will open prison and be imprisoned the rest. Infidels have no value.”
234 Nigerian schoolgirls, aged between 15-18, were abducted from a remote school in Chibok village, Borno State, in Northeast Nigeria on April 15. The girls and young women came from schools in Izge, Lassa, Ashigashiya and Warabe to do final exams because other the schools were shut in Borno state because of attacks by Boko Haram.
Iman Shekau said the sects friends are those in Afghanistan, Mali, Yemen and Pakistan, and not those Arabs who just bragged with their colors but deal with Americans and the West. Shekau said there is slavery in Islam, contrary to his critics, noting that Prophet Muhammed took slaves during Badr war in Hejaz region of western Arabia in present day Saudi Arabia.
Shekau said, “Just because I took girls in Western school they are worried. I say they (the girls) should desert the school.  They should go and marry. Stupid people.  Talking about human rights and democracy. Nonsense.  People that are doing same sex marriage and saying they are leaders.”
And he added, “I will imprison Jonathan’s daughter, any one that turn to Islam will be saved. For me anyone that embraces Islam is my own. Stupid Jonathan, you will be surprise. Until the land is soaked with blood.”
Later he said, “This is a war against Christians and democracy and their constitution, we have not started, we will be in Abuja, and in your state. This war is against Christians, I mean Christians, generally the infidels. Allah says we should finish them when we get them.”
Shekau boasted in the video that he has no business with infidel’s money, “I have no time with your trillion. I am working for Allah and will die for it.  No one can stop me. You killed Mohammed Yusuf.  Are you not saying he is even better than Shekau? Even if you kill me, other fighters will rise better than me, I am nothing and worthless before Allah who I am working for. You are sitting with Christians and saying we are one, saying there is no difference. We are not one with infidels.”
Later he said, “It is a lie, in fact you suppose to wash and re-wash a plate Christian eats food before you eat as Muslims. You know all these things and you are contradicting Islam. Are Christians the people we should play with? They killed us in Shendam, Zangon Katab and all the places. It is either you are with us or you are with them, and when we see you, we will harvest your neck with knife.”
He cursed Islamic political leaders the late Malam Aminu Kano, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, and Islamic scholar, Usman Dan Fodio as infidels for working and accepting democracy and constitution, and added, “We are not ignorant of all that happened.”
The mass abduction three weeks ago, and the Nigerian military’s failure to rescue the girls and young women, has roused national and international outrage with protests in major cities in Nigeria, and across the world.
A number of girls have escaped who said their captors identified themselves as Boko Haram.
Nigerian Police Commissioner, Tanko Lawan told reporters the number of escaped girls is 53.
